When Malaysia Tourism campaigns for ‘Malaysia – Truly Asia’, it is no empty slogan. The rich diversity of this country is amazing; Malaysians, Indians and Chinese form the rich kaleidoscope with a veritable mix of customs and traditions, festivals and cultures. There is no better place to look for a complete holiday experience than Genting highlands close to the capital city Kuala Lumpur.

Holiday Travel to Malaysia

Hooked by the Malaysia Tourism ad, we were on a Malaysian Airlines flight from Delhi to KL, as Kuala Lumpur is called. Selamat Detang (Hearty Welcome) they say, and that is how it was.

The meeting point of Kelang and Gombak Rivers was imaginatively named Kuala Lumpur (Muddy Convergence). Malaya came under British rule in 1913 and its economy prospered with the Indian and Chinese immigrant population increasing significantly. Malaya became independent in 1957, and in 1963, Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore combined with it to establish Malaysia. Singapore later became a separate nation.

We landed at the fabulous KL International and were whisked across to the main terminal building by a mini-train shuttle speedily and comfortably. A representative of the tour company received us affectionately and led us to an air-conditioned car to take us to the resort of Genting Highlands, a few hours out of KL. One can also take the KLIA Express train from the airport to KL Central Station 75 km away in less than an hour.

The Heavenly Genting Highlands

Genting Highlands at 2,000 meter above sea level is not just a hill station but a tourist haven. It has an abundance of hotels that are mind-boggling.

There is the gigantic Resort World Genting which is really six hotels under the same management, all interconnected, with over 2,000 rooms. The whole complex has been developed on a hill, with all facilities of entertainment, games, eateries, and shopping. The eating places provide all the cuisine of the world; Continental, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Indian, etc. It also has the only licensed 24x7 casino in Malaysia.
